Rick Scheffert’s pottery ranges from utilitarian pieces, that will add enjoyment to your daily meals, to decorative pieces including large vases and face pots. His designs often come from nature, and sculptural elements are an important part of many of his works.

Rick lives and works in a beautiful valley 5 miles south of Decorah. He began his journey into pottery under the direction of Dean Schwarz at Luther College. In addition to his studies under Schwarz he took classes from “Jack” Dale Raddatz and participated in workshops taught by various potters including Marguerite Wildenhain and William Daley.

murray-boxFiber

2011 features many new pieces! Having worked in traditional quilt-making techniques since 1983 my ideas about fiber art began to shift in new directions in 2000. With this change comes a new body of work that reflects my passion for nature, color and texture. New styles of fiber art have emerged with this redirection and the resulting thread paintings, fiber collage and framed pieces complement and diverge from my traditional roots.

In addition to the art for sale on my website, commissioned pieces can be arranged.

Individually instructed sessions are available for those interested in creating their own unique quilts or artwork.

Visits to my studio in beautiful Northeast Iowa can be scheduled with advance notice.

Karen Haas Misseldine/Profile

Pottery

karen.self.2016Karen Misseldine began creating pottery in the early 1980’s while at Adrian College in Michigan where she graduated with a double-major in sociology/human services and art. She later received her Masters Degree in Art Therapy at Vermont College of Norwich University. After graduation, Karen’s pottery-making sat on the shelf until 2001 when she and her family moved to Decorah, Iowa. Karen soon realized after putting her hands to the wheel again, that creating pottery is a part of who she is, and no amount of time can take it away from her.

Karen creates everyday-functional pottery that is microwave, oven and dishwasher safe. She is known for her dinnerware sets, butter keeper, jewelry pot, berry bowl (strains berries), and many other practical items like mugs, bowls and platters. Each piece is one of a kind and almost all of the pieces are inspired by Karen’s love for nature with their warm fall and jewel-toned colors and occasional leaf prints.

Karen’s pottery is available through the Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour and upon request. She does commission work and shows her pottery by appointment. At Karen’s studio you will enjoy seeing a wide-variety of her pottery pieces and the process of creating them as well as taking in the beautiful tree-covered hillside view from her deck.
Karen has been on the tour since 2003, which was her first professional show. She now participates in the Bluff Country Tour and holds a private Holiday Show in her home. Karen is a member of the Iowa Art Therapy Association and American Art Therapy Association. While attending Adrian College she received the Outstanding Senior Art Award.

Although Karen loves pottery making it does come second to her passion for art therapy. Karen thoroughly enjoys the interaction with people she has while doing art therapy. In Decorah she is best-known for her pottery-making, but in the surrounding communities she is becoming more well-known for her giftedness in art therapy. She travels many miles each week to work with elderly and disabled individuals through art therapy.

Willow Baskets and Birch Bark Boxes

2016.220.lee.lindsayArtists/naturalists Lee Zieke and Lindsay Lee have long been known around the area for their work in landscape gardening and as growers of perennial flowers.
Lesser known are their talents with willow and other natural materials like birch bark and riven green wood. Their baskets and boxes are the perfect companion of beauty and functionality.

“There is something magic” says Lee when you can take this pile of sticks and by bending and twisting them the right way, this lovely form comes into being.”
Together Lee and Lindsay grow their own willow in a coppice patch covering about three acres. By harvesting (cutting) the stems near the ground each year, a crop of graceful flexible weaver rods is produced.

“It really is a renewable resource”. says Lindsay. “With the birch bark it’s more of a salvage operation, as it is harvested ahead of the logging crews. Traditionally it is done without harming the tree.”

In the studio the bark is peeled back to reveal the inner layers, cut, decorated and bent into the versatile storage canister. They are inspired by traditional Scandinavian birch work.

Please consider this an invitation to visit Lee and Lindsay’s rural studio and see their projects along with the raw materials utilized in their work.
