I find that every few years I shift my artistic gears and head in an entirely new direction even though I largely consider myself a watercolor artist. Two years ago I was into cut-work watercolor. Before that I was obsessed with creating under-painting texture with Halloween cob-webbing, largely due to an experimental watercolor class I had taken through the Iowa Watercolor Society. Recently I REdiscovered oil painting but on a very large scale. In 2013, I painted 7 oil paintings, mostly abstracts, the largest one 4 feet by 6 feet, the smallest 2 feet by 4 feet. And in between I painted one as a triptych and another as diptych. I gave two works to my children and the other 5 sold almost before the oil paint was dry. Already in 2014 I have completed a large work that’s entitled “Inspired by Lichen” and I intend to keep it. NFS!
So does this mean I will continue as an abstract oil artist for the rest of my painting days? I doubt it. I never know when my muse will move me to shift gears again and lead me to who-knows-where!
I am a member of the Iowa Artists organization and the Iowa Watercolor Society and have won many awards in their annual art shows. I exhibit at Agora Arts, the Perfect Edge, and the Luther Book Store here in Decorah and the Bluff Country Artists Gallery in Spring Grove, MN. In addition to the Northeast Iowa Studio Tour, I have two shows in my home – the Summer Garden Art Show in July during Nordic Fest and the Winter Woods Art Show the first weekend in December.
