Marcia Cook was born in Tacoma, Washington. She attended Washington State University and Eastern Washington State University, and earned a BA in Art.
Marcia moved to Seattle in 1972 and worked in jewelry trade shops in Seattle and Bellevue, Washington, apprenticing under master bench jewelers and achieving journeyman jeweler credentials in 1975.
She was a charter member of the Women’s Metal Arts Group in Seattle and the Alaska Metal Arts Guild.
In 1977 she started Gold Spells, a special order jewelry company. This eventually grew into a nationwide custom casting service for jewelry designers.
In 1997, she moved to Skagway and joined Casey McBride at Taiya River Jewelry as a designer, bench jeweler, and precious metal caster. In 2012 she and Casey McBride moved to Decorah, Iowa setting up a jewelry studio on an acreage south of town.
Though she works with 18K gold set with unusual stones and pearls, Marcia specializes in 22K gold. She is inspired by fabulous jewelry and studies her extensive collection of jewelry history books as a personal challenge to raise the level of her art. She has great respect for the craftsmanship of ancient jewelers, as their work has survived the ages. She hopes her work will do the same.
Casey has been making jewelry for more than 40 years. In 1970 he participated in workshop courses in silver jewelry-making at the MacNider Art Museum, Mason City, Iowa. From that time he has been self-taught with no other formal training,
Moving to Skagway, Alaska in 1974, Casey established Taiya River Jewelry in 1976 and began creating natural gold nugget jewelry. Marcia Cook joined him in 1997 and together they operated Taiya River Jewelry until 2012 when they moved to Decorah, Iowa.
Casey was a charter member of the Alaska Metal Arts Guild and is a past member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths. He is also a retail member of the American Gem Trade Association.
Casey creates jewelry pieces in 18 Karat Gold combined with natural gold nuggets, diamonds, or colored stones. His favorite material is raw, natural gold nuggets. The small gold nuggets are soldered to karat gold to create unique patterns and textures.
Casey believes jewelry should be wearable and durable. A jewelry piece should be enjoyed for generations.
Kim Bosworth started designing and creating hand-beaded jewelry several years ago, anticipating retirement from a life-long teaching career. Beading jewelry offered a relaxing way to unleash her creative side while feeding her passion for beads. Her artistry evolves around simple yet elegant original designs arising from a mixture of bead color combinations, shapes, and textures. She incorporates a variety of beads and materials: pendants, semi-precious stones, glass, crystals, fresh-water pearls, metal, sea-glass, polymer clay, wood or glass tiles, and natural shells that she collects from Florida beaches. Her designs include 3-piece necklace sets, bracelets, ankle bracelets, earrings, wine glass charms, and bookmarks. Her process lends itself to spontaneity which she feels produces a more creative and appealing design and sense of self-expression. Often it brings a surprise that is personally satisfying. Her intent is to create a finished product that captures both a traditional and contemporary look, pleasing to the eye.
Kim enjoys customizing jewelry to enhance a client’s attire or special occasion, whether it’s special pieces for a wedding or charm bracelets for holiday gifts. She often shares her talent with local elderly care facilities and displays her work at several arts and crafts shows and farmers’ markets throughout the year in Iowa and Florida where she and her husband spend the winter months.
Kim has a studio in her rural home north of Decorah, IA and in her winter home in St. Augustine, Fl.

Linda Elkins was born and raised near Detroit Michigan. She left the midwest for the southwest living there for 15 years before returning to Michigan and getting her MFA in fibers. From Fibers(weaving) her work evolved into bookmaking, paper making and collage and assemblage.
She enjoys ressurecting things that have been discarded, left behind, replaced, or just broken and combining them into other identities with new meanings. Whether collage or assemblage, at times her work involves universal human concerns and at times her own fantasy world. She especially likes juxtaposing the past with the present, creating layers of meaning. Alchemy comes to mind. Each thing she uses has had a past life, a past conotation or meaning, and she attempts to place each into a new arena of relationships. Recently much of her work seems to be an attempt to answer “what’s it all about?” and “who/what has been here before me(us)/”. She consioders herself a miner of lost things, lost ideas, metaphors. Those people who know her studio space, know she has a lot of “stuff” from which she harvests and gathers materials.

Eric Petersen-Brant is largely a self-taught artist working in clay, paint, printmaking, and more while also being a prolific poet and talented musician as long as he can remember. His ceramic work is reminiscent of the processes of the natural world, creating forms that are inherently earthy, grounded, and comfortable to use and live. These clay works include lively animal figures, eroded wall-hanging slabs, elegant dinnerware and more. When not making art, Eric can be found teaching art or overseeing the operations at Decorah’s community arts center, ArtHaus, with his wife and fellow artist, Jenni Petersen-Brant.

Jenni Petersen-Brant learned the craft of creating elegant utilitarian pottery while earning her MFA at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a BFA at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Her current focus is on creating functional pots, with a delicate flare and supple surfaces, that act as daily reminders to celebrate the trivial, the tragic and the triumphant. She also dabbles in printmaking, mosaic, and craft work. When not making art, Jenni can be found teaching art at or overseeing the operations of Decorah’s community arts center, ArtHaus, with her husband and fellow artist, Eric Petersen-Brant.

Art has always been a part of Sharlene Bohr’s life. Her connection to textiles began at a young age with her mother and their mutual fondness for quilting. She loves to play with color and pattern and that has combined with her appreciation of nature, born from growing up in rural Winneshiek County, IA.
Sharlene first discovered eco-printing while living in Los Angeles, CA. A friend of hers introduced her to the process and she was captivated from the moment she unwrapped her first piece. Eco-printing is a technique where plants, leaves and flowers leave their shapes, color, and marks on fabric.
Sharlene places every leaf by hand (or, sometimes, tweezer), creating a pleasing pattern and color palette. The plant material is bundled inside of cloth and steamed or boiled to release the dye found naturally inside the plant, creating a contact print in the shape of the leaf or flower used. Colors are revealed as the plant material is lifted off the unwrapped fabric. These contact prints are referred to as “eco-prints.”
“I solely use natural dye sources because I think the colors that come from nature possess a special quality that’s not found in manufactured dyes. I like how regional plants reflect the area in which they are found, and how the colors change as the seasons progress.”
Sharlene especially likes to mix natural dye techniques, play with different metals, and layer up fabrics to add texture and dimension to her work. Some of her favorite design moments are in the creation of a piece meant to hang on the wall.
Sharlene now resides in Cresco, IA. In her studio, you’ll find her wrapping fabric around pipes, rocks, and sticks, letting the magic of nature reveal itself through her textiles.

Her designs include 3-piece necklace sets, bracelets, earrings, wine glass charms, and bookmarks.
Her process lends itself to thoughtful spontaneity which she feels produces a more creative and appealing design and sense of self-expression. Often it brings a surprise that is personally satisfying. Her intent is to create a finished product that captures both a traditional and contemporary look, pleasing to the eye.
Kim enjoys customizing jewelry to enhance a client’s attire or special occasion. She enjoys sharing her talent with local care facilities and displays her work at arts and crafts shows, farmers’ markets in Iowa, and her gift shop, Crystal Clear Galleries in St. Augustine, Florida where she and her husband spend the winter months. Recently, Kim self-published her first novel, Just When I Needed Her Most and is currently working on her second novel. She enjoys baking goodies and sharing them with others.
Kim has a studio in her rural home north of Decorah, IA and in her winter home in St. Augustine, Fl.

BIO: Born in 1973, Tonya Balik grew up in Decorah, IA and moved to Minneapolis in 1992 to attend the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and spent the next decade working with photographers before completing her BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 2006. After receiving her MFA from the University of Minnesota in 2010, she returned to her roots in northeast Iowa. It is her childhood here in Iowa that informs her current projects—the place where, as a child, her grandmothers taught her to sew, crochet, and knit; all techniques that she continues to use in her work.
ARTIST STATEMENT: My work as an artist involves a wide range of materials that attempt to capture the ephemeral – the often over-looked fleeting elements of daily life. The techniques I use vary from traditional drawing and painting to mixed media, experiments in photography and traditional women’s crafts including quilting, sewing, crocheting and knitting. At present, I am using found materials, colors and imagery from childhood. I use these visual records as references to specific times and places. The process of first discover and then creating this work has become meditative; a way to both collect and release secrets, thoughts and fears.

The 16th annual Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour (NIAST Inc.) applications to exhibit are now available to area artists. Print an application or more information, email Darla or Glen Ellickson or call 563-382-2295. The 2013 Tour takes place October 11, 12 & 13. Studios are open 10 to 5 daily.

Items include: Painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, clay/ceramics, wood, glass, metal, printmaking, mixed media, handmade paper, fiber, etc. as appropriate at Fine Art Fairs. All works must be original in concept and design and must have been executed by the applicant: works from molds or kits, commercial or manufactured items, and buy/sell are not permitted. Tour exhibitors qualify as “fine artists,” meaning, “They possess the skill to expand and adapt even a high-end craft with individual vision.” Artist’s applications for tour entry are juried, and participants are selected for their work’s technique, quality, and vision and studios must reside within 40 miles of Decorah, in Iowa. Postmark deadline for submitting an application is February 28, 2013.
The self-guided Tour is specially timed to enjoy the fall color and travels along winding gravel roads, for a behind-the-scenes view into the Artists’ personal workspace.
Many attendees traveled from as far as Chicago in one direction to Omaha the other. The 2012 Tour featured 53 artists at 43 locations. Estimated 2000 visitors annually from as many as 15 states and 2 countries have been reported as attending from past Tours. According to the Travel Association of America, Cultural travelers spend more per trip than the average U.S. traveler. The Studio Tour brings economic benefit to the entire northeast Iowa area.
Participating in this event features inclusion of color photos of your artwork and contact information in top quality full-color posters and 20-30,000 brochures, complete with detailed map with GPS to studio locations. These brochures are distributed in many ways, including: being personally handed-out by the touring Artists throughout the country; through a bulk-mailing of nearly 9000 brochures to the pre-qualified mailing lists of the Artists; to special requests to area Tourism venues; and from the tour drawing cards requesting information.
Past NIAST press has included: 2000 September Minnesota Monthly, national exposure in 2000 November American Artist, 2001 Luther Alumni Magazine and 2002/03 Home and Away magazine. 2003 Tour news was included in: The Iowan, Tapestry, several area newspapers, the Des Moines Register, and the Boston Herald. Winneshiek County Tourism Convention and Visitors Bureau (WCCVB) recognized the Studio Tour for “Leadership in Promoting Regional Tourism” in January of 2005. 2007-2012 featured extensive radio advertising on KDEC radio and IA Public Radio.

Pottery
Rick Scheffert’s pottery ranges from utilitarian pieces, that will add enjoyment to your daily meals, to decorative pieces including large vases and face pots. His designs often come from nature, and sculptural elements are an important part of many of his works.
Rick lives and works in a beautiful valley 5 miles south of Decorah. He began his journey into pottery under the direction of Dean Schwarz at Luther College. In addition to his studies under Schwarz he took classes from “Jack” Dale Raddatz and participated in workshops taught by various potters including Marguerite Wildenhain and William Daley.

Fiber2011 features many new pieces! Having worked in traditional quilt-making techniques since 1983 my ideas about fiber art began to shift in new directions in 2000. With this change comes a new body of work that reflects my passion for nature, color and texture. New styles of fiber art have emerged with this redirection and the resulting thread paintings, fiber collage and framed pieces complement and diverge from my traditional roots.
In addition to the art for sale on my website, commissioned pieces can be arranged.
Individually instructed sessions are available for those interested in creating their own unique quilts or artwork.
Visits to my studio in beautiful Northeast Iowa can be scheduled with advance notice.
Pottery
Karen Misseldine began creating pottery in the early 1980’s while at Adrian College in Michigan where she graduated with a double-major in sociology/human services and art. She later received her Masters Degree in Art Therapy at Vermont College of Norwich University. After graduation, Karen’s pottery-making sat on the shelf until 2001 when she and her family moved to Decorah, Iowa. Karen soon realized after putting her hands to the wheel again, that creating pottery is a part of who she is, and no amount of time can take it away from her.
Karen creates everyday-functional pottery that is microwave, oven and dishwasher safe. She is known for her dinnerware sets, butter keeper, jewelry pot, berry bowl (strains berries), and many other practical items like mugs, bowls and platters. Each piece is one of a kind and almost all of the pieces are inspired by Karen’s love for nature with their warm fall and jewel-toned colors and occasional leaf prints.
Karen’s pottery is available through the Northeast Iowa Artists’ Studio Tour and upon request. She does commission work and shows her pottery by appointment. At Karen’s studio you will enjoy seeing a wide-variety of her pottery pieces and the process of creating them as well as taking in the beautiful tree-covered hillside view from her deck.
Karen has been on the tour since 2003, which was her first professional show. She now participates in the Bluff Country Tour and holds a private Holiday Show in her home. Karen is a member of the Iowa Art Therapy Association and American Art Therapy Association. While attending Adrian College she received the Outstanding Senior Art Award.
Although Karen loves pottery making it does come second to her passion for art therapy. Karen thoroughly enjoys the interaction with people she has while doing art therapy. In Decorah she is best-known for her pottery-making, but in the surrounding communities she is becoming more well-known for her giftedness in art therapy. She travels many miles each week to work with elderly and disabled individuals through art therapy.
Willow Baskets and Birch Bark Boxes
Artists/naturalists Lee Zieke and Lindsay Lee have long been known around the area for their work in landscape gardening and as growers of perennial flowers.
Lesser known are their talents with willow and other natural materials like birch bark and riven green wood. Their baskets and boxes are the perfect companion of beauty and functionality.
“There is something magic” says Lee when you can take this pile of sticks and by bending and twisting them the right way, this lovely form comes into being.”
Together Lee and Lindsay grow their own willow in a coppice patch covering about three acres. By harvesting (cutting) the stems near the ground each year, a crop of graceful flexible weaver rods is produced.
“It really is a renewable resource”. says Lindsay. “With the birch bark it’s more of a salvage operation, as it is harvested ahead of the logging crews. Traditionally it is done without harming the tree.”
In the studio the bark is peeled back to reveal the inner layers, cut, decorated and bent into the versatile storage canister. They are inspired by traditional Scandinavian birch work.
Please consider this an invitation to visit Lee and Lindsay’s rural studio and see their projects along with the raw materials utilized in their work.
